Every month a group of wonderful women meet for a day of peer mentoring and spiritual deepening. Each meeting has a special topic to ponder and discuss. This past meeting I facilitated, creating a topic inspired by Carolyn Baker’s books “Collapsing Consciously” and ‘Navigating the Coming Chaos” in which she suggests six practices to build emotional resiliency in order to withstand the stresses of times such as we are in with the frightening covid crisis and lockdowns, restrictions and cultural disarray. I share here the program I put together for us, taking each of her six suggestions and enlarging it with images, pondering and questions sfor our retreat day of deepening and sharing.

May we all find a way to be strong and courageous during this challenging time.

GOING DEEPER WITH CAROLYN BAKER’S PRACTICES FOR EMOTIONAL RESILIENCY (during a Covid winter)

The REAL question is not “Is there Life after death, but is there Life BEFORE death?”

Our life is a band of brightness between two invisibilities” ~John O’Donohue

Is there anyone here who longs for Life and desires good days?” ~ St. Benedict of Nursia

THE SIX PRACTICES FOR Life, Emotional Resilience, and Happy Days

1. JOURNALING: “HOW IS IT WITH YOUR SOUL?” ~ An ancient Celtic greeting with an Anamcara. (so much deeper than “Hi, what’s up?)

Come now to the secret places of the soul.Let us each inspect ourselves with care, looking at the emotions that stir our hearts and the thoughts that run through our minds. Let us learn the essential goodness of the Heart from the heart itself.

~Morgan of Wales (Pelagius) ~ 360 AD-420AD

2. POETRY: When we cannot find the words, poetry…which comes from the SOUL of the poet… finds them for us and helps to reveal the truth in our hearts for all emotions and experiences. Search for poems or write your own! Two poems below:

Life is short, though I keep this from my children by Maggie Smith

Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children.

The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.

For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children.

(Instead) I am trying
to sell them the world.

Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shit hole, chirps on
about “good bones”….. “This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.”

QUESTION: in spite of the darkness in the world and the challenges right now, what are you doing to make this place beautiful in your own way?

The Real Work

It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work

,and that when we no longer know which way to gowe have come to our real journey.t

the mind that is not baffled is not employed.

The impeded stream is the one that sings.

~ Wendell Berry ~

3. DREAMS AND DREAMWORK ~ Capture the Dream, LISTEN to its wisdom/guidance and DO the work of follow-through. (Monastic Mantra: Ora et Labora – WORK and prayer. This is our work!”)

4.MEDITATION AND PRAYER– how about Lectio Divina using Sacred Scripture, Poetry or Essays and Letters by wise human being?

And the Lord says ‘Stand at the crossroads and LOOK (listen). And ask for ANCIENT PATHS where the good way lies. And walk in it, and find rest for your Soul” ~ Jeremiah 16:6

QUESTION: What word or phrase in the above scripture speaks to you to ponder more deeply? Be still with it. What else comes up for you in holding it? What would you say to God/Your Higher Self about this? What would you ask? LISTEN for an answer in this dialogue”. Be still and then go about your life. Like a seed deep in the earth, this seed is now planted in your psyche and heart and will bear fruit in time.

5. CREATE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL/CREATIVE EVERY DAY ((Altars, crafting, cooking/baking, sewing, gardening, writing, artwork,letter-writing-playing an instrument, singing) OR SEEK OUT SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL OR CREATIVE TO ENJOY EVERYDAY – Listen to uplifting Music, watch Theater, Films, appreciate Artwork, reading words of inspiration)

*** Watch a creative scene from the production HAMILTON. (King George)

6. DELIGHTING IN NATURE– Paying attention to the beauty, mood and message of each season. Take that season into your spirit…how do you BE Summer? Autumn? Winter? Spring?…paying attention to the beauty and changing light and darkness and day and night in Nature as we move through the 24 hours. What is Nature Doing? What lessons does the Earth want us to know at different times of the day? TAKE WALKS! Take pictures on your walk! BRING SOME herbs into your living space over the winter to use, and smell! Make herbal preparations for your wellness! Give thanks.

WE DID NOT COME “into’’ THE Earth. WE came OUT of it” ~ ancient Celtic Wisdom

ALL OF NATURE IS ENSOULED. THE SOUL IS NOT INSIDE OF US. WE ARE IN THE SOUL OF THE WORLD WHICH EXTENDS TO THE FARTHEST REACHES OF THE COSMOS) ~ ancient Celtic Wisdom.

QUESTION- How are you intentionally delighting in Nature? What are some of your favorite Nature Places in your movement through the week? What are some of your favorite entities in Nature? Birds, Water. Trees, the Wind, the element of Fire, Creatures, Dogs and Kitties, butterflies, flowers, herbs, Rocks and Boulders etc. etrc.
