Lighthouses are amazing structures. Strong. Defined. Towering. Commanding. Courageous. Often they are built on jetties, or islands in the raging seas, accessible only by boat, and the first question that comes to mind is “How did it get there in the first place?”

We usually think of a lighthouse’s mission as a guide to bring those lost at sea, home again to safe land. We think of it as a beam of light, or metaphorically speaking, a beam of Wisdom bringing us to a place of sure-footedness and grounding when we are adrift in our lives, tossed about by raging emotional waters, or simply adrift and rudderless, not knowing where we are or where we are going. We usually associate these lighthouses with the sea, be they structures, guiding words or wise people or mentors who draw us back to home.

But “lighthouses” are for those of us on land too, in times when we DO know where we are trying to go, when the direction or new dream is compelling but to get there we need to fight our way through brambles, prickles and obstacles to clear the path. In this case we need to follow the dream by keeping our eyes on the light calling us home to our authentic selves.

We sometimes cannot do it alone. A trusted friend, a mentor, a wise counselor, a Lighthouse Keeper who knows who we are and who we can be, comes with the lighthouse, switching on the beam to guide us home to our best selves and purpose.

In my life, I have had many “Lighthouses” and am so thankful for all of them no matter what form they have taken. I invite you, too, to scan all horizons in your life whether on land or sea to appreciate the Lighthouses that have brought you home to yourself over and over again.

Heather and Snow Two (2) PICASA

Yesterday, March 20, was the Vernal (Spring) Equinox in North America. Pictures of tulips, lambs, bunnies and bouquets of flowers were cheerfully posted all over social media, bringing color, a sense of beginnings, warmth and new visions after the cold and silence of winter.

Meanwhile on the eastern coast, we awaited a snow event promising to  once again cover the slowly emergent green from the past week of warmer rains.

The sun is now bright after the snowfall, melting this morning’s  blanket of white, but we have not yet made the transition really from Winter into Spring. This is an in-between time… snow and heather trying to co-exist if only momentarily.

Transitions times are a real thing…neither this, nor that…but both and neither. Nature is a startling metaphor for situations in our lives that are neither one thing or another. I know this to be true because that is exactly what I am experiencing at this time: an in-between time from what my life was, and what will be.

I have let go of my life and home and beloved gardens and routines of the past 18 years of rhythm and familiarity, partly by choice and partly by fate. … much if not all of my worldly possessions in storage while I am granted a blessed “time-out” living with friends in order to heal in spirit and recalibrate where to go from here. I am leaving a winter experience of life with residues of frozen challenges while emerging into color, creativity and new experiences that are part of an eldering, but also newly- blossoming me.

I know I am not alone in these times of transition…the in-between times when we are compelled to make changes that incorporate both plusses and minuses. Letting go of parts of what we love, stages of grief, recognition of blessings in the in-between times that aid us and help us move along, hints and glimmers of what can be that we only now can envision as new possibilities.

Spring IS coming, and one thing about Spring that is different from winter-into-spring is the uncompromising energy of Spring RUSHING without confusion into SUMMER…the time of bursting through the cold hard ground into stems, blossoms, fruits and vegetable, color and LIFE.

But today…heather and snow..is the In-Between Time of patience and promise.. a time that is neither this nor that. But both.

I think I can work with that……

Orange door

Synchronicities and “winks” are always such a part of my life when I focus on something… a touch of “magic” that is a regular part of my life, and probably yours as well if you really pay attention.

Recently in honor of the vibrant season of Autumn, I have been writing about about the color Orange  along with photos of orange flowers, orange monarch butterflies, vines and colored tendrils of that hue that catch my eye.

I wrote the first essay  in the middle of the night so eager to share the photos and the delight over that color which is such an important part of this magical season of turning.

Several hours later that morning, I left the house and got on the road to go into town for some shopping.  As SOON as I got out there, I was passed by bright ORANGE Volkswagon bug…NEVER have seen one of those before… a really weird color for a car, and quite funky for a Volkswagon which somehow could pull it off!

After shopping,  I went to visit a friend whose house I had not been at for maybe 20 years and when I pulled into her driveway, this is what greeted me before I knocked…! A bright ORANGE door decorated for Autumn. Inside her home, the color orange was repeated in her personal decorating.. charming home-made curtains, dishes, and more.  I could only laugh and say “thank you for the conversation and feedback from the Universe, which apparently loves the color orange too!

Sometimes we think we initiate ideas and projects, but actually I come to think that the Universe is in charge, inviting us to respond to and share its initial promptings and messages that need to get passed on through us.  I DO believe that!

It reminds me of something a very special spiritual director once told me.  “God always initiates prayer. When we stop to pray through something…we are really responding to the invitation to communicate with the larger loving forces”.

I rather like that idea.

So what’s next? Surprise me! (and I’ll share it…!)

Keeper of Mysteries

What happens when your authentic soul path leads away from your traditional roots?  A little memoir  about following or including different Paths in search of the Great Mysteries : “All that is Hidden, All That is Plain: A Personal Story”.

Please go to my new companion website to follow this thread: www.thegreeningspiritmysteryschool.com   *click on the post title there to read or leave comments. Thank you!

I bet many others have their own stories on following a path of Authentic Unfolding!

IMG_0869 This past weekend,  the ongoing monthly Dream Retreat at the Greeeningspirit’s Place brought an amazing group of women together to once again take “Time Apart” to share, process and glean deep wisdom from our dreams. Several of us have been dreaming together for almost 20 years!  However, in this month’s session,  there was a surprise…a rather different format..in which we used a Pathworking Guided Meditation from Nicki Scully’s outstanding audio workshop  Becoming an Oracle , to access another stream of knowledge. In a deep state of relaxation, we were led into a communal “dream” and a journey to visit a tribe of indigenous aboriginal people in Australia,  in order to learn another way of,  and reason for,  working with  the stories that come through us in the night. We “accompanied” them on a walkabout and into their culture of “The Dreamtime”.

In our culture, when we work in contemporary fashion with dreams, we tend to be very subjective  interpreting our dreams for personal transformation through the symbols, metaphors, and stories that unfold. We work with the dreams from either a psychological or spiritual approach, or a mixture of both , and hopefully use the wisdom that is gleaned to become better people, clarify and implement our Life’s path with grace, live in peace, discover our gifts, and deepen our relationships with others, with ourselves and with God. This is good. Very good.

However, in our modern Western culture, which emphasizes ” individual individuation”, there is something left out in this approach to dreams. And that is, that there is also a component in the Dream that is meant for the Community, for the Culture, for the Peoples, or for the welfare of The Earth itself. This component is known to Indigenous Dreaming Peoples such as the Aboriginal people of Australia and many Native American tribes or shamanic cultures, in which a narcissistic expression of the Ego is an illness, not an achievement. (well, it is always an illness,  but in this culture that often forgets the reality of the Soul of Humanity,  such skewed expression is rampant and often devastatingly unrecognized).

And so in our little circle of Dreamers, we , with closed eyes, went on guided Visualization journey to experience the way an aboriginal tribe would walkabout the land, dreaming, sharing and literally following where the dreams led them for the good of the people, whether that be for food, for education, for healing or for a new part of their human story. The destiny and welfare of the individual and of the tribe were interwoven. The dream stories and  the working of the dream in the outer life then was sung and became a “songline” which as it became longer and longer, was memorized and passed down so that future generations would know which way to go for survival and well being.

The two specific questions  that were asked of us in that guided visualization were simple though profound:  What dream are YOU following?” and “What is YOUR  song?”  In the guided visualization, to the hypnotic music of an ancient didgeridoo, there was time to ponder these questions. And after the Pathworking process ended, we each took those two questions  outside to sit in the garden, under the trees, on the deck, or near the woods to discern this for ourselves.IMG_0868

Finally we returned to our circle, having connected with our indigenous Souls, to share what that meant to us individually and also culturally. It is important to know this, for it became clear that we have a great responsibilty. For WE are the ANCESTORS of TOMORROW. (As a wise native American teacher taught with a wry but profound comment  – “If we don’t change course SOON, we will surely end up we we’re headed…”

For myself, those two questions which were asked of me..of US.. in the Dreamtime Journey, mean thus:

What Dream are YOU following?” = Whose Life are you living? Is it coming from the Inside of YOU, or is it programmed  from the Outside Culture of Superficiality?  Is it worth it to you to know the difference? (write down your dreams and ponder them..the answers are there!)

What is  YOUR  Song?”  = What do you stand for?  What message do you bring in the way you live? Who will sing your song when you are gone?  (write down your dreams and ponder them, implement them. The answers are there!)

At the end of the Visualization,  when all gathered themselves back into the Circle,  it was encouraged and spoken simply: “Tell the  People Your Dreams”.

Which is why we gather each month for our all-day Dreamretreat. We realize that we want to live life to the fullest and from the highest vibration for ourselves and the good of all.  And quoting from this Journey, in Becoming and Oracle:

“WE HAVE COME HERE TO LEAVE OUR MARK AS THE ANCESTORS HAVE DONE!”
