What’s your mission?

The Greening Spirit

E Sept 10

Nature is very clear in how she assigns work to her beloved creatures. Beavers build dams, creating natural waterways in environments that sustain the life around its banks, wolves group themselves in dedicated family communities whose job is to cull weak and incapacitated herd animals insuring a healthy population that the land can sustain, squirrels busily bury acorns in late fall for future food but also to be the movers of oak trees further out into the environment insuring their continued survival.  What a glorious inter-connected web.

Bees have their assigned task as well, besides feeding and caring for the Queen and her baby bees. Daily they leave the nest commuting to work in beautiful fields of flowers, quite mobile and enjoying the change of scene full of color and fragrance within their workday, gathering golden nuggets of pollen to be transformed into the sweetness of honey. Yes, they work hard but they know what they are supposed…

Those whose gardens are the sanctuaries of herbs know that humility is a Virtue.  We often refer to herbs and their “virtues”, a medieval usage of  the word, describing their merits and usefulness subtly hidden in their at-a-first-glance smallness. Theirs is a humility defying the flashiness of showy and commanding Divas, but instead, tended in the green world by the elusive but ever present plant “Devas” whose mission it is to oversee and communicate the virtues inherent in each plant. Indeed that humility might almost render a clump of borage invisible except for tiny quick flashes of blue if we are moving through the garden mindlessly and in a hurry.

The herbal kindom require us to slow down and practice the soul-virtues of stillness and deep seeing. Looking closely into a patch of tiny blue flowers amongst their soft but prickly leaves, we observe a tiny magnificence of color, complexity and imaginative shape. The borage flowers are beautiful…another of the plants that exhibit the 5-pointed star in its form. If we moved quickly and mindlessly by a patch of this plant, as so many humans do in our largeness and speed, we might miss the complex but delicate blossom design.

Borage flowers closeup

Borage has many “virtues” and gifts for us. An herb of “good cheer”, it was thought to dispel melancholy and pensiveness (Culpepper) which actually happens when taking a true look at its richly colored flowers and their display.

A slight taste of cucumber in its leaves and blossoms offers a cooling effect…it can be used as a tea, or added to salads.

Herbs and their uses come in and out of favor in different time periods, but truly their virtues are always present whether acknowledged or not. I find that something shifts and awakens in me when I am hanging out with the herbs…something mysterious, wondrous, and alive…as if under an enchantment.

Enchantment… a virtue of Soul accessed through the magic of deep-seeing and discernment.  A rather nice way to live….whether one be a a plant or a person.

Boots on the Ground

We live in awesome but perilous times. As the Greening Spirit, the desire of my heart in life and on this site is to celebrate and inspire hope, creativity, reverence, humor and Beauty. But the times we live in and the bigger stories of global unrest, fighting and war, weapons and destruction can be so disheartening. The thought forms and greed-propelled interests of governments and Men in Power, and of enraged disenfranchised, sectarian or fundamnetalist peoples have created limited responses that bring destruction rather than life as solutions. Weapons, bombs, drones, poisons of fear, psychopathic-driven power plays are destroying all that should be green on the earth and green in our souls.

Last night, I happened to have the nightly news on which is quite unusual for me as I seldom watch t.v. News  of all our “Wars” in the world ie the War on Drugs, the War against Cancer and Diabetes, the War on Poverty, The War on Ebola, the War Against Terrorists… it goes on and on. Our language is very limited, creatively.  But the use of the word “WAR” shows a mindset that is unquestioned, deeply engrained in our perspectives and very deadly…

Now we have a new common phrase about how we participate in” War” and I mean real war invoving men in uniforms carrying weapons and not physically defending our own coastlines and homeland but in faraway places. Do we send drones? Send bombs? OR do we put “Boots on the Ground”?

Boots on the Ground“.  The Greening Spirit found herself yelling out loud in the living room last night, shouting at the t.v.   “NO! NO BOOTS ON THE GROUND! WE’VE HAD ENOUGH!” And then hearing that 3000 “boots on the ground” (Miltary) going into Africa to “fight in the war against Ebola” made me shout louder. I don’t believe that is, if our history proves us right, a humanitarian effort or the way to solve the problem. Government contractors will follow.

The Greening Spirit prays for Veriditas  “in the people that were meant to be green” as called by Hildegard of Bingen.  For clean air, and flowing clear waters, for forests and plants that are food and medicine, for communities that create beautiful habitats and sanctuaries for people in which to love, and raise families, and sit in circles telling stories and who grow gardens and share food and solace and celebrations.

The Boots on the Ground in this desired world that cherishes life are the boots in the Garden of Life right where we live..the Gardens of Life that nurture, create instead of destroy, that bring merriment instead of fear, that dance in the green rather than struggle through the mud and fields of destruction and death.

Boots on the Ground ………

Veriditas~ Hildegard (1098-1179)

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer. ~ Dylan Thomas

***************************************************************************************************************

Veggie Altar 1It has been a fierce and wild winter. Not so much a continuous snow here on the coast, but rather cold, and one major blizzard with the immense power of its furious Winds which buried us in heavy wet snow, shredded and took down trees and power lines, leaving many of us without electricity, heat, light and water for over a week.

Nature wields un-imaginable power that we ignore at our peril. Perhaps that is why the ancients, indigenous peoples and the pagani of the earth took such care to honor, celebrate and ritually appease that immense FORCE for life and death that is inherent in the energetic Greening Spirit of the Cosmos.

I have felt that so strongly this season. Perhaps it is because I am of a certain age and have witnessed, experienced  and gathered the teachings, challenges and gifts of many turns of the wheel of life, and I have not yet emerged from the spirit of actual winter this particular year. Perhaps it is because just recently, my own mother has passed and in the almost-spring phase of February and March when one starts seeds and seedlings indoors for the eventual garden,  dreaming of Life,  I have been rather  out-of-sync momentarily in the process of grieving. The great FORCE of the winds  and the destruction that it has brought with it, taking down and decimating so many young and elder trees alike, combined with the ending of my mother’s life had made me feel the inevitable far end of the spectrum of the opposites of existence: the visible and invisible, the great sound and the Great Silence, the Force that pushes Life UP! and that same force that breaks and  takes Life DOWN!.

Winter right now is at the very end of the cycle, saying “goodbye” just as simultaneously Spring is seemingly gently nudging us to wake up and say “hello” to the great  Life Force of the Greening Spirit that has had enough of stillness and frozen sensibilities, and with the greatest Force, thrusts us and all living things up and out of real or symbolic darkness into the New. It is for this reason we often in great excitement “plant” our spring bulbs or Narcissi and tulips, gladioli and daffodils with a sense of excitement: to participate and help  the process of birthing and renewal along…to see and smell GREEN and enjoy all the  fresh and vibrant colors that were asleep while grey, brown , black and white blanketed the earth for their allotted time.

This past week, because of the ruthlessness of the winds that took down so many trees, and the death of my mother, I went to the markets in search of a little prepared potted narcissus to bring home for an altar in honor of letting go of the past, and to honor the new, bringing the green, the color and the scent of new life into my “living room” itself. I needed to do that because I had been unable to cry and let the tears flow for all that had ended and demanded a goodbye. I was however quite surprised and  frustrated when I found just the perfect little pot with several miniature yellow blooms and buds ready to open, and then realized that I had left my checkbook and debit card at home by mistake and did not have enough cash on me to purchase the flowers! Oh how I needed to see and sense the Greening Spirit of Life on that special altar I had set up at home for comfort and inspiration.

Veggies 1I returned home and started to prepare dinner, going to a bowl filled with winter squashes, avocados, sweet potatoes, and garlic. And there..THERE..right amidst this bountry, was one large sweet onion…. sprouting green shoots, just like the narcissi! I truly had not seen it before in that state as I moved about the small kitchen preparing meals..how could I have missed this only onion on the plate, firm and hard still, but with the tall green shoots straight up, thrusting out of itself from the ineffable power of the driving Greening Spirit of Life wanting to flower and bloom! I had  missed bringing home the potted narcissi because instead here was an Onion, which if cut and chopped for cooking, brings tears, TEARS that are frozen behind the eyes, sometimes not even knowing that they were there in the first place.

The Universe and Great Mystery and I dance together, and I believe always that there is the potential dialogue between us if we pay attention and listen deeply. This was the perfect plant of life for my altar at this moment..a plant that symbolized both nourishment, an aid for the flowing of tears, and soon, a bloom as well..an onion that embodies within its seemingly solid and finished self..the spark of new life that mysteriously MUST move up and out….”the force that  through the green fuse, drives the flower…”

It is unstoppable!

And there will be a flower on one of those green shoots eventually..a globe of purple or some secret onion color…the promise of Spring, the power of the Greening Spirit and renewal will soon be here. Is ALWAYS here!

I am grateful for the way the Great Mystery and I play together.

11-11-11 Speaking of Mysteries

Leap Towards Your Dreams!

11-11-11  LEAP TOWARDS YOUR DREAMS!!

mywebsite:www.thegreeningspiritmysteryschool.com.  Come on over and visit!

http://youtu.be/HzHHbgwmqw0      (click here for a video greeting!)

For quite a while individuals and groups of people have been fascinated with the line-up of these numbers..a triple 11.. and since it only occurs once every several  hundreds of years, assigning this date (and the times today of 11:11 am and 11:11 pm) with possibly numinous powers. This affirms my belief that people in ordinary lives are longing for a sense of Mystery and ways to celebrate the awesome powers of something much bigger and grander than what we experience on a day to day basis in a mundane, routine state of consciousnes.

Much of what I have read in the explanations by LightWorkers have left me puzzled with the esoteric language that almost seems undecipherable. But what I have come to sense in plain language is that the attention given to these numbers today has been quite different than the attention given to dates and DOOM in the past.

What seems different here is the magnetic pulling of diverse peoples together to celebrate a fortuitous turn toward what is new and happy and unifying, instead of cowering in fear or selling all your possessions and home to leave the earth on the hour to a better place!  Indeed with enough global attention, ritual, celebration and communications today..11-11-11 just might signify a momentous time of a change in human consciousness. How exciting!

I think globally so many of us know or feel “the end times” refer to perhaps an end to unquestioned “unconsciousness” and we have had enough of violence, unbridled consumerism, greed and political and religious fundamentalisms..this 11-11-11 has the focus on “the new times”.

In astrology, the 11th house is the “place” of the Future, not the past, and rules hopes, dreams, wishes of the Community,  the dreams of the Visionaries for progressive socially-conscious change and equalities. Using our imaginations (and Visionaries have awesome imaginations!) we can perhaps use this energy to Dream a new future…the seeds of which are indeed already here in the hearts of so many. Let’s pool together to make “the hundreth monkey” or the Tipping Point! (“revolution”-which is usually angry preceeds “evolution” which is cause for joyful celebration btw)

May you find a small, medium or Gigantic change of consciousness today in some aspect of your familiar and deliciously blessed Lives!

JUMP across some chasm in your own personal story to a new Freedom!

Blessings and Love, Christine (the Greening Spirit)

The Dance of the Femine Face of GodA week ago at the Greening Spirit’s Home, we had an evening convocation of spirited women coming together in another one of our sacred Circles to learn and share community, wisdom and inspiration. The purpose of this gathering was to view the newly- released documentary of the visionary artist, Meinrad Criaghead. Formerly a contemplative Benedictine nun for 14 years, she is now a shining Elder who lives simply in a small home and studio in New Mexico, by the Rio Grande, with her canine companion,  opening her heart and space to small groups of women coming in on occasion for communal retreat and contemplative renewal.

Meinrad was not just your ordinary contemplative  Catholic nun living in a monastery. While participating fully in the Christian practices and life of Catholic teachings,  her primary workplace within that community was in the art studio, creating wild and passionate paintings expressing her private inner relationship with God the Mother.

Since the paintings were recognized in the art world as something quite extraordinary and were selling to those who understood and appreciated what they saw, and because monasteries must support themselves independently (jams, cordials, greeting cards, fruitcakes etc) the Order’s practical monastic financial  saavy left Meinrad alone to produce darkly beautiful images of the Divine Feminine….and so starkly and passionately that I am sure in another age, she may have been burned at the stake for heresy!

Before watching the movie, and with a huge bowl of sweet and salty Kettle Corn on our table altar for sensual treats, we went around the circle so that each woman could introduce herself and share her original spiritual backround, and where she was now on her spiritual path and present naming of God. There was eagerness  in each women to speak about this, and eagerness and intensity in each of the women to listen deeply to the experiences revealed, without judgement, without challenge, and with the greatest hospitality and reverence. No one seemed to have to fill a desire to make a point, take a stand, but rather to Learn and Listen, Question and Share.

The stories each woman shared about their former religious paths were deeply engaging, amusing, comforting and shocking. Three of us had grown up Catholic and had loved the sensuous beauty of Catholic liturgy…the lovely music, the candles, the incense, the artwork , the gorgeous and inspiring setting and architechtural design of Church and stained-glass windows as well as the ritual of the Mass and “Time Apart-ness”  in the silence of catherdral or chapel  Yet now, all of us,  past the age of 50, have moved away from full participation, if at all, in  the traditional parish church and the patriarchal language, teaching  and practices that have silenced women’s voices and ignored the sacred passages inherent in a women’s life cycle…which  are very dramatic if we start to name what those passages are, biologically, spiritually and psychologically. The naming of God remained more problematic..If God were not inherently MALE, then is God FEMALE ?  Do we say “Goddess” instead, which for some is just as problematic as “God”. The consensus for our naming was that one woman said yes, for her the image of God remained Male out of familiarity, tho now in question. The two others said God is “Mystery/Spirit” and the renaming is now in process. One of us is moving towards the image of the Feminine Face God as in  the Great Mother, or She-Who-Is.

One woman was raised,  and is still active in, the Episcopal church, in which she has experienced the freedom to think more for oneself  than in the Catholic Church, and in which both gay persons and women may be ordained as priests, and even elevated to Bishop.  For her, God is “Spirit” at this time, male imagery gone….but not necessarilly feminine either.

One lovely and deeply spiritual woman was raised a natural “pagan”…no push in her family to go to any church, but a family with strong ethics and ties to home, family, fields and land by the sea, which became Church for her as she played, prayed and listened to nature and the natural flow of one season into another…everything sacred and filled with mystery and delight. To her, Everything is wondrous and Holy. And God is NOT masculine. Not even close.

And finally, one woman’s experiences of being raised in a Greek Orthodox Church drew gasps of surprise and grief. In her story, the most patriarchal of all, women were not allowed to receive communion during their monthly cycle  and after birthing, being seen as “unclean”. A rigid doctrine and body of religious rules forced her of her own volition and will, to flee all such indoctrination, which was so strong that upon leaving she “became” an atheist for a period of time…a leap necessary for her to claim her own authenticity, starting from scratch, and listen deeply within to what the poet Rilke described as ..”that Homesickness for what we cannot name”…, which can only be filled by some sort of personal connection to Mystery/Source,/God -of-your-own Naming.  Now presently finding a spiritual home within the Unitarian Community,  she expressed that our little Circle that evening felt like the finding   a gentle comfort addressing  a corner of  “that Homesickness that we cannot name”:  the candle on our altar, the incense in the air, the deep sharing of our stories in the VOICES and EXPERIENCES of Women seeking the Sacred, which are powerful and transformational forms of personal Sacred Scripture holding deep wisdom individually and for each other. Even gratitude too,  for the experience to dialogue with others over the concept of “God”.

The documentary of the Life of Meinrad Craighead was deeply moving, inspirational, emotional. Afterwards we shared about those stark, sometimes dark, always strange and beautiful images from her visions and paintings of the Divine Mother, The Feminine Face of God. At evening’s end, there were huge hugs, new connections, exchanges of phone numbers, and an enormous energy of gratitude, homecoming and blessing….

This was another form of “Church”.  In exploring the Feminine Face of God, we left with no Answers, but with many many new Questions…which as Rilke also said,   (…it is not as  important to have answers as it is to)…”Live the Questions…”

Through this evening, in Circle , with its  reverential and soul-sharing stories of the Feminine EXPERIENCE of the Sacred…God became Bigger.

Yes, SHE did.

The Mystic Life Through the Eyes of a Grandmother

128_128I am on a social networking site with a variety of “friends” who have a diverse swath of interests.  All are very interesting..and one can learn a lot and share a lot.

One  group of writers are very interested in the “Life of the Mystic”, sharing back and forth all kinds of writings and quotes by the Desert Fathers of ancient times, deep ponderings on the nature of God in the  Judeo-Christian traditions, and the finer points of theology and monastic life drawn from the Middle Ages.

While this is, in fact, part of my own original religious heritage and has much beauty and inspiration,  my life’s experiences as a woman have unfolded in such a way as to draw me ever closer to the Feminine Face and Feminine Experience of God and the Sacred, which has been much ignored if not at times denigrated in the major traditions.  The Path of the Mystic was somehow deemed to be somewhat rigorous,  often apart from daily life and to be officially accessed and supported through practices , prayers and readings drawn from sacred writings and texts.

This past weekend, much of my time was spent rocking my newborn grandson, a tiny newcomer alternating between asleep and awake, between  being “There” and “Here”, lying in deep peace and quietude upon my heart. His repose was awesome in those moments, full of Trust and just “Being”…nowhere to go, nothing to do,  just to Dream as he continued to slowly emerge into the World, even after birth.

For this weekend, all schedules of mine, tasks and responsibilities were set aside to assist my daughter and gently rock my grandchild into this new Life, and the repose and quietude within myself brought me closer to the Holy than any reading of scripture or poetry at this time. Watching my daughter breastfeeding, nourishing and comforting this newborn in her arms while she was very still and present was a prayer of wonder and celebration, the little one just BEING  in the arms, and on the Heart of the Mother, in the arms, and on the Heart of the Grandmother,  and all of us (including Dad, who also is loving and strong), in the Arms of the Divine.

The Path of the Mystic does require “Time Apart” in order to witness the small daily miracles that are ever present, and that fill us with a sense of awe and wonder. The Path of the Mystic can immerse  us in Beauty and move us to tears or prayers of gratitude and praise for the sacred surprises and Mysteries for which we often have no words.  We may trust, however, that it is in this  state of Presence and Soulfulness , blessed by Grace,  that ordinary experiences  are illumined and made extraordinary by stillness,  awareness and just being. (As an indigenous teacher once said “We are here to become human Be-ings, not merely human Do-ings).

We need not always enter the desert to find the Holy. And that is something  many Women have come to know since the lives of Mothers and Grandmothers often involve constant involvement in the lives of others. As the ones who physically give birth, and are often in charge of the care and feeding of others, giving out nourishment and support at all levels within the family system, the Time Apart to feed the Mystic within ourselves may be experienced in the brief  and simple moments of being in the garden, tending a wonderful pot of soup…or rocking a newborn.

And that IS a form of very personal Sacred Scripture on the path towards the Feminine Face of God.

“GOOD MEDICINE” is Wellness Medicine!

Morning Tea! Nettles, Mugwor, Red Clover

Morning Tea! Nettles, Mugwort, Red Clover

In the ancient Chinese medical system using herbs and sometimes strange ingredients from nature, the job of the doctor was to keep the Emperor well and in good health, NOT to fix him after he got sick! In fact, it is said, perhaps anecedotedly, that if the Emperor became ill, the doctor lost his job, if not his head. If that were so in this culture, we might have more than a few doctors running around, shall we say,” mindless”  since there is an emphasis in our allopathic medical system on “Fixing” rather than preventing. However, to be totally fair, it must be said that a major  part of the responsibility for staying healthy is on each one of us to practice “Good Medicine” in our daily lives through proper diet (REAL food, and at regular peaceful intervals), exercise, a spiritual practice,  and knowledge and use of the natural “medicines and nourishments” from the plant allies around us.

One has to be careful in this culture with the word “medicine”  so let me be clear that what I primarilly mean by this word is what indigenous peoples mean by this word in it’s highest meaning. “Good Medicine” is that which keeps you Well and Healthy in the first place, and secondarilly that which nourishes and brings you back into balance when you have been stressed into illness. The herbal allies after all, have been the basis for medical pharmacopeias in all cultures across the centuries. According to the World Health Organization several years back, it was noted that 80%  of the world’s population still practices “Green Medicine” for the common maladies that are part of our lives as we flow back and forth between being balanced and unbalanced as part of the stresses and challenges and celebrations of human living.

At this time, I am one of many people, who due to the work and economic chaos we are in, have found myself for the first time without health insurance. It is therefore very necessary for me to practice “Good Medicine” to take care of myself in all the ways that will build me up to stay on my feet and engaged in life with vitality and vibrancy. For instance, recently after a bout of intestinal distress, my digestive system was very irritated and sensitive. Two days of an herbal tea of comfrey leaf, mugwort, skullcap, meadowsweet, and spearmint  soothed all discomfort and brought my system back into a normal state, without the use of over the counter medications which actually mask the symptoms but do not bring healing.

My own “Magic Garden”  full of the wild and cultivated herbal allies serve as both a nutritional and medicinal resource, as well as grounding me in my connection to both the spiritual, magical and natural world that has been gifted to us  by the Great Beneficense, God, the Great Spirit, Mother Earth. For me, both that spiritual and earthly connection is part of my personal Wellnes Program, keeping me grateful, full of imagination and wonder, and giving me hope always, knowing that I am participating in my own health care.  It is a form of self-empowerment that spills over to many areas of my Life and I am very grateful to be able to experience this personally and pass on that wisdom to others in my community.

***On Sunday, June 12, our little band of Greeningspirits will regroup here for Part 2 of Your Magic Garden: The Wild Plants and Herbs to empower themselves and their families. Studying together in this way delights us all as we make Community with the GreenSpirits in the garden, as well as the GreeningSpirits of our new friendships with each other…all part of “GOOD MEDICINE” for sure! (New friends are welcome). Veriditas! Christine
